Cultivating Creativity

How email is killing your creativity

Ever tried to come up with a great idea while you’re writing an email? It’s nearly impossible, probably because we frequently check our email throughout the day and attempt to multitask constantly. Research out of Stanford shows that multitasking actually wastes more time than it saves and has a crippling effect on deep thinking. PR firm InkHouse implements a few guidelines to help fuel its employees’ creative thinking and focus. Standing out on that list are “no email hours” between 7pm and 7am (and weekends) and unlimited vacation time. CEO Beth Monaghan also recommends leaving the center of your desk clear for human interaction and communication (computer to the side) and blocking off time for yourself to recharge and relax every day.
