M-Health: Healthcare Goes Mobile

Things are looking app

Your smartphone may soon be just as important to your health as a doctor’s visit. Mobile health (or m-health) is growing, with about 165,000 available health-related apps on the market already. Though most of these apps are basic wellness-focused, a growing number of health apps are offering direct communication between doctors/therapists and their patients, and some are able to diagnose minor ailments or monitor chronic conditions. The artificial intelligence system Medtronic is developing an app that can predict abnormal blood sugar levels in diabetes patients up to 3 hours in advance. Concerns with accuracy and personal privacy are being addressed as well, but the possibilities in preventing emergencies and lowering health costs are staggering. (Economist, 03.12.2016)
