Shanghai Disney

How China won the keys to Disney's Magic Kingdom

The $5.5 billion Shanghai Disney Resort opens tomorrow in a landmark partnership between Disney and China. The park will ultimately be four times the size of Disneyland, and over 330 million people live within a 3-hour trip. In the process of bringing this giant project to life, Disney let loose the reins a bit and now shares a large portion of the decisions and design with Chinese government. These Chinese officials have had particular influence on creating attractions for adults as well as children, including a vast central garden and new unique roller coasters. That initial partnership opened the doors for other players too. IBM will share technology with China and LinkedIn has conceded to censor its content inside the country since, and China hopes the new park will set off waves of demand for toys, clothes, movies, and everything else Disney.
