A Natural Habitat for Dolphins

National Aquarium announces plans for North America's first dolphin sanctuary

The National Aquarium in Baltimore is ironing out plans to create a dolphin sanctuary, an outdoor facility filled with natural seawater, by 2020. Both public opinion and scientific research has shifted toward support for more natural habitats versus captivity for dolphins in recent years, and aquariums and other organizations are taking notice. The aquarium envisions not only seawater in this habitat, but also a vegetated shoreline with mangroves and sea grapes, all in an effort to create the most realistic natural habitat possible. However, the project won’t be without its challenges, as only one of the aquarium’s eight bottlenose dolphins has ever lived in the open ocean previously. (NPR, 06.15.2016)
