Artificial Sweeteners: Good or Bad?

How artificial sweeteners may mess with your brain

Lots of us choose diet soda over regular these days, but it may not be giving you the benefits you think. In fact, some studies have found that artificial sweeteners (found in diet sodas, among other food and drink) may actually fuel weight gain instead of weight loss. Researchers at the University of Sydney recently tested the effects of real and artificial sugar on fruit flies and mice, and in both cases the animals who were regularly exposed to artificial sweeteners ate more food than those exposed to only real sugar. The theory is that real sugar tastes even sweeter after you’ve grown accustomed to the fake stuff, causing you to eat even more. Artificial sweeteners also caused symptoms like hyperactivity, insomnia and glucose intolerance in test subjects. (Forbes, 07.12.2016)
