A staggered seating design approved by the FAA this year is scheduled to be implemented on flights beginning in early 2020. The design includes a slightly lower middle seat that sits back further than the aisle and window seats. This setup, along with an uneven armrest, allows passengers to travel more comfortably in the middle seat. Passengers in the middle can rest their arms on the back of the armrest that sits lower, while those on either side can rest their arms on the front of the armrest that sits higher. While this setup is currently a design for domestic flights, a more advanced version for international flights is in the works. (CNN Travel, 07.19.19)
