America’s Growing Pilot Shortage

A pilot shortage is disproportionately affecting airports in smaller markets and causing ticket prices to go up. The shortage is largely due to statutory and regulatory changes, like changing mandatory retirement ages and an increase in mandatory flight hours. There is also a noted decline in interest in commercial aviation careers. All of these shifts coupled with an increased demand in air travel has caused a serious disruption. United Airlines recently closed its Cleveland hub for good, citing a pilot shortage. Analysts believe the sustained disruption will soon result in fewer flight options and more expensive tickets for consumers. (Fortune, 10.16.17)
